Aluminium Foil Price in America Falls Slightly to $5,173 per Ton After Four Consecutive Months of Decline
U.S. Aluminium Foil Import Price in December 2022
In December 2022, the aluminium foil price stood at $5,173 per ton (CIF, US), which is down by -4.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 7.4% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $5,763 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to December 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($7,233 per ton), while the price for the UK ($3,335 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Aluminium Foil Imports
In December 2022, the amount of aluminium foil imported into the United States amounted to 34K tons, picking up by 4% against the previous month. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the period from January 2022 to December 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 36K tons in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to December 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium foil imports reduced to $178M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% from January 2022 to December 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 27% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 199K tons in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to December 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Aluminium Foil Imports by Country
China (7.4K tons), Turkey (4.8K tons) and South Korea (3.2K tons) were the main suppliers of aluminium foil imports to the United States, with a combined 45% share of total imports. India, Oman, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia, Luxembourg, the UK and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest aluminium foil suppliers to the United States were China ($29M), Turkey ($21M) and South Korea ($19M), together accounting for 39% of total imports. Germany, India, Italy, Oman, Thailand, Brazil, Luxembourg, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese) and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
