Aluminium foil exports from China expanded notably to X tons in 2022, rising by 9.7% compared with 2021. In general, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, aluminium foil exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons), India (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of aluminium foil exports from China, with a combined 23% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Mexico, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Malaysia, Canada, Vietnam and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for aluminium foil exported from China were Thailand ($X), South Korea ($X) and India ($X), together comprising 23% of total exports. Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Canada and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
Canada, with a CAGR of +20.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average aluminium foil export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Aluminium Foil Imports
Imports into China
After four years of growth, overseas purchases of aluminium foil decreased by -13.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.7% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, aluminium foil imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Japan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium foil to China, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium foil imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), threefold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan amounted to +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-2.1% per year) and Thailand (+23.9% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium foil to China, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan totaled +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-6.8% per year) and Germany (+7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average aluminium foil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -12.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
