Tea Exports from India Fell Dramatically During the Pandemic
IndexBox has just published a new report: 'India - Tea - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
Tea Exports from India
In 2020, shipments abroad of tea decreased by -20.6% to 210K tonnes, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, with an increase of 13% year-to-year. Exports peaked at 271K tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure. In value terms, tea exports shrank significantly to $692M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
Russia (37K tonnes), Iran (36K tonnes) and the U.S. (13K tonnes) were the main destinations of tea exports from India, together comprising 41% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, China, the UK, Kazakhstan, Germany, Iraq, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan (Chinese) and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 37%.
In value terms, Iran ($132M), Russia ($88M) and the U.S. ($60M) were the largest markets for tea exported from India worldwide, together comprising 40% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, China, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Iraq, Taiwan (Chinese) and Tunisia, which accounted for a further 33%.
The average tea export price stood at $3,293 per tonne in 2020, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent growth rate was recorded in 2019, an increase of 7% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $3,351 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($4,709 per tonne), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($1,585 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
