South Africa Woven Carpet Imports

In September 2023, overseas purchases of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings decreased by -28.9% to 249K square meters, falling for the second consecutive month after three months of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 94% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 430K square meters in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woven carpet imports contracted significantly to $911K (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 70% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 1.5M square meters in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey (97K square meters), China (88K square meters) and India (61K square meters) were the main suppliers of woven carpet imports to South Africa, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest woven carpet suppliers to South Africa were India ($329K), Turkey ($288K) and China ($239K), with a combined 94% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +6.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the woven carpet price amounted to $3.7 per square meter (CIF, South Africa), reducing by -11% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 45% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $7.6 per square meter in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($14.2 per square meter), while the price for China ($2.7 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
