Average Price of Titanium Dioxide Pigments in South Africa Is $2,825 per Ton

South Africa Titanium Dioxide Pigments Import Price in July 2023

In July 2023, the titanium dioxide pigments price amounted to $2,825 per ton, therefore (CIF, South Africa), remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 11% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,369 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($6,475 per ton), while the price for India ($1,590 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Luxembourg (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Titanium Dioxide Pigments Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In July 2023, the product with the highest price was pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide (excluding those containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide) ($3,247 per ton), while the price for pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide totaled $2,763 per ton.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by titanium dioxide pigments (excluding those containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide) (+3.9%).

South Africa Titanium Dioxide Pigments Imports

In July 2023, overseas purchases of titanium dioxide pigments and colouring preparations were finally on the rise to reach 1.8K tons for the first time since March 2023, thus ending a three-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 79% m-o-m.

In value terms, titanium dioxide pigments imports surged to $5M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 78% month-to-month.

South Africa Titanium Dioxide Pigments Imports by Type

In July 2023, pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide (1.6K tons) constituted the largest type of titanium dioxide pigments supplied to South Africa, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide (excluding those containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide) (227 tons), sevenfold.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide was relatively modest.

In value terms, pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide ($4.3M) constituted the largest type of titanium dioxide pigments supplied to South Africa, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by pigments and preparations based on titanium dioxide (excluding those containing more than 80 % by weight of titanium dioxide) ($737K), with a 15% share of total imports.

South Africa Titanium Dioxide Pigments Imports by Country

In July 2023, China (864 tons) constituted the largest supplier of titanium dioxide pigments to South Africa, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, titanium dioxide pigments imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (339 tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (220 tons), with a 12% share.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (-4.4% per month) and the Netherlands (+1.7% per month).

In value terms, the largest titanium dioxide pigments suppliers to South Africa were China ($1.9M), Germany ($1.1M) and the Netherlands ($810K), together comprising 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Luxembourg, the UK, India and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 17%.

India, with a CAGR of +7.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
