South Africa's Knitted Fabric Price Drops Sharply to $4,176/Ton

South Africa Knitted Fabric Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the knitted fabric price stood at $4,176 per ton (CIF, South Africa), shrinking by -10.8% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated slight growth from December 2021 to December 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2022 figures, knitted fabric import price decreased by -10.8% against November 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 an increase of 55% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $6,552 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($10,902 per ton), while the price for China ($3,789 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

South Africa Knitted Fabric Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm ($18,995 per ton), while the price for knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm, containing by weight >= 5% of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread ($1,362 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm (+7.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Knitted Fabric Imports

In December 2022, imports of knitted or crocheted fabrics into South Africa declined modestly to 5.2K tons, which is down by -4.8% against the month before. In general, imports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 with an increase of 172% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 7.9K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to December 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knitted fabric imports fell rapidly to $22M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 with an increase of 112% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 32K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to December 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa Knitted Fabric Imports by Type

Fabrics, knitted or crocheted, of a width of > 30 cm (2.3K tons), knitted or crocheted pile fabrics (1.4K tons) and knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width > 30 cm, containing by weight >= 5% of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread (921 tons) were the main products of knitted fabric imports to South Africa, with a combined 89% share of total imports. These products were followed by warp knit fabrics, incl. those made on galloon knitting machines, of a width of > 30 cm, knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm, containing by weight >= 5% of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread and knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm, which together accounted for a further 11%.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width <= 30 cm, containing by weight >= 5% of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while imports for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, fabrics, knitted or crocheted, of a width of > 30 cm ($10M) constituted the largest type of knitted fabric supplied to South Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by knitted or crocheted pile fabrics ($5M), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by knitted or crocheted fabrics, of a width > 30 cm, containing by weight >= 5% of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread, with a 19% share.

South Africa Knitted Fabric Imports by Country

In December 2022, China (4.6K tons) constituted the largest knitted fabric supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius (110 tons), with a 2.1% share of total imports. Thailand (93 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.8% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+1.3% per month) and Thailand (-0.1% per month).

In value terms, China ($18M) constituted the largest supplier of knitted fabric to South Africa, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($1.2M), with a 5.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.3% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+2.6% per month) and Swaziland (-3.3% per month).
