South Africa's Grape Price Slumps 21% to $1,331 per Ton After Five Consecutive Months of Decline

South Africa Grape Export Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the grape price stood at $1,331 per ton (FOB, South Africa), falling by -21.2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 17% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,100 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to May 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($2,968 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($466 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Grape Exports

In May 2023, shipments abroad of grapes decreased by -92% to 1K tons, falling for the third month in a row after four months of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 3,031% m-o-m.

In value terms, grape exports dropped dramatically to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Overall, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 3,558% m-o-m.

South Africa Grape Exports by Country

Zimbabwe (204 tons), Mozambique (168 tons) and the UK (162 tons) were the main destinations of grape exports from South Africa, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya, Canada, Botswana, the Netherlands, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia, which together accounted for a further 40%.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the biggest increases were in Tanzania (with a CAGR of +4.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($351K) emerged as the key foreign market for grape exports from South Africa, comprising 25% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($130K), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with an 8.2% share.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to the UK was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Botswana (-7.1% per month) and Zimbabwe (-0.4% per month).
