These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Taiwan, Chinese, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, the Philippines, Belgium, Germany and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In 2018, the average soap and other detergent export price amounted to $3 per kg, lowering by -14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%.

There were significant differences in the average export prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest export price was the Netherlands ($8.5 per kg), while the average price for exports to China ($1.3 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2013 to 2018; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In that year, soap and other detergent imports attained their peak , and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country


In 2018, China (126K tonnes) constituted the largest soap and other detergent supplier to the U.S., with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, soap and other detergent imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second largest supplier, the UK (27K tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Italy (12K tonnes), with a 4.4% share.

From 2013 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +13.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+11.8% per year) and Italy (+41.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($244M) constituted the largest supplier of soap and other detergent to the U.S., comprising 40% of total soap and other detergent imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the UK ($69M), with a 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.4% share.

Import Prices by Country


In 2018, the average soap and other detergent import price amounted to $2.3 per kg, going up by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest import price was Germany ($4.4 per kg), while the price for Guatemala ($845 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Mexico (+3.9% per year), while the import prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
