Price of Ferro-silicon Drops 5% to $1,693 per Ton in Qatar

Qatar Ferrosilicon Import Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the ferrosilicon price amounted to $1,693 per ton (CIF, Qatar), shrinking by -4.6% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 40% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,237 per ton. From July 2022 to March 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($1,732 per ton), while the price for China totaled $1,170 per ton.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-5.4%).

Qatar Ferrosilicon Import Prices by Type

As there is only one major imported type of ferro-silicon, the average price level is determined by prices for ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon amounted to -2.1% per month.

Qatar Ferrosilicon Imports

In March 2023, supplies from abroad of ferro-silicon was finally on the rise to reach 360 tons for the first time since December 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when imports increased by 2,122% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 600 tons. From September 2022 to March 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-silicon imports expanded markedly to $609K (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 with an increase of 2,476% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.4M. From September 2022 to March 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In March 2023, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon (360 tons) was the main type of ferro-silicon supplied to Qatar, accounting for a approximately 100% share of total imports.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon totaled +27.4%.

In value terms, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon ($609K) constituted the largest type of ferro-silicon supplied to Qatar.

Qatar Ferrosilicon Imports by Country

In March 2023, India (335 tons) was the main supplier of ferro-silicon to Qatar, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, ferro-silicon imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (25 tons), more than tenfold.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +46.6%.

In value terms, India ($580K) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to Qatar, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($29K), with a 4.8% share of total imports.
