The exports totaled 6.9M tonnes in 2017, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. The polyethylene exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, polyethylene exports stood at $9.7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The polyethylene exports continue to indicate a slight deduction. Over the period under review, polyethylene exports attained their peak figure at $11.4B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country


In 2017, Belgium (1.6M tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (1M tonnes), the Netherlands (978K tonnes), France (635K tonnes), Spain (504K tonnes), the UK (503K tonnes) and Sweden (316K tonnes) were the largest exporters of polyethylene, together committing 82% of total exports. Italy (178K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (+7.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($2.4B), Germany ($1.6B) and the Netherlands ($1.4B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, together accounting for 55% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Spain, the UK, Sweden and Italy, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Export Prices by Country


The polyethylene export price in the European Union stood at $1.4 per kg in 2017, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. The the polyethylene export price continues to indicate a mild deduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 19% against the previous year. The level of export price peaked at $1.8 per kg in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average export prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2017, major exporting countries recorded the following export prices: in Sweden ($1.7 per kg) and Italy ($1.6 per kg), while the UK ($1.2 per kg) and Spain ($1.2 per kg) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Italy (+0.3% per year), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Polyethylene Imports


Imports in the EU


In 2017, imports of polyethylene in the European Union stood at 7.8M tonnes, jumping by 5.8% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 12% y-o-y. The volume of imports peaked in 2017, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, polyethylene imports totaled $10.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The polyethylene imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, polyethylene imports reached their peak figure at $12.6B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country


The countries with the highest levels of polyethylene imports in 2017 were Belgium (1.4M tonnes), Germany (1.2M tonnes), Italy (888K tonnes), France (629K tonnes), Poland (562K tonnes), the UK (499K tonnes), Spain (497K tonnes) and the Netherlands (487K tonnes), together accounting for 79% of total import. Sweden (226K tonnes), Portugal (178K tonnes), Greece (174K tonnes) and the Czech Republic (173K tonnes) occupied the mild share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Portugal (+7.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polyethylene markets worldwide were Germany ($1.8B), Belgium ($1.7B) and Italy ($1.2B), together comprising 43% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Poland, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Greece and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Import Prices by Country


The polyethylene import price in the European Union stood at $1.4 per kg in 2017, remaining constant against the previous year. The the polyethylene import price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 24% year-to-year. The level of import price peaked at $1.8 per kg in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average import prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, major importing countries recorded the following import prices: in the Czech Republic ($1.5 per kg) and Sweden ($1.5 per kg), while Belgium ($1.2 per kg) and the Netherlands ($1.3 per kg) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by the UK (-0.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
