European Pantyhose and Tights Market in the EU - Italy Still Dominates EU Exports, Despite Negative Growth Rates

The revenue of the pantyhose and tights market in the European Union amounted to $3.1B in 2018, stabilizing at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). 

Exports in the EU

In 2018, the pantyhose and tights exports in the European Union totaled 39M pairs, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, pantyhose exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when exports increased by 12% y-o-y. The volume of exports peaked at 53M pairs in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pantyhose exports stood at $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. Over the period under review, pantyhose exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of exports peaked at $1.6B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy was the main exporting country with an export of around 17M pairs, which resulted at 44% of total exports. Germany (2,679K pairs) took a 6.8% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Croatia (6.2%), Poland (5.4%) and Romania (5.3%). The following exporters - Spain (1,727K pairs), Slovakia (1,429K pairs), Slovenia (1,344K pairs), Austria (1,235K pairs), France (1,065K pairs), the Netherlands (1,003K pairs) and Greece (892K pairs) - together made up 22% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2018, average annual rates of growth with regard to pantyhose exports from Italy stood at -2.7%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+21.3%), Spain (+16.9%), Slovenia (+15.0%), Croatia (+9.5%), Austria (+6.3%), Romania (+5.7%) and France (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter in the European Union, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2007-2018. Greece and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. 

By contrast, Germany (-1.7%) and Slovakia (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Croatia (+3.9 p.p.), Spain (+3.6 p.p.), Slovenia (+2.7 p.p.), Romania (+2.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.2 p.p.) and Austria (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2007-2018, the share of Slovakia (-3.6 p.p.) and Italy (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($486M) remains the largest pantyhose supplier in the European Union, comprising 43% of total pantyhose exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Croatia ($135M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 8.4% share.

In Italy, pantyhose exports declined by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2007-2018. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+16.3% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the pantyhose export price in the European Union amounted to $29,128 per thousand pairs, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, the pantyhose export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 6.1% y-o-y. The level of export price peaked at $31,664 per thousand pairs in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Croatia ($54,902 per thousand pairs), while Greece ($2,743 per thousand pairs) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2018, the imports of pantyhose and tights in the European Union totaled 66M pairs, rising by 5% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2007 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, pantyhose imports reached their maximum at 81M pairs in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

In value terms, pantyhose imports stood at $1.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2007 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, pantyhose imports reached their peak figure at $1.8B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The UK (12,134K pairs), Germany (11,800K pairs), France (8,293K pairs) and Italy (7,141K pairs) represented roughly 60% of total imports of pantyhose and tights in 2018. It was distantly followed by Croatia (3,627K pairs), generating a 5.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Spain (2,946K pairs), Poland (2,546K pairs), the Netherlands (2,509K pairs), Austria (2,386K pairs), Belgium (1,943K pairs), Romania (1,515K pairs) and Sweden (1,178K pairs) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Croatia, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($229M), the UK ($168M) and France ($144M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2018, together accounting for 39% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Croatia, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Romania and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 47%.

Croatia recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the last eleven years, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2018, the pantyhose import price in the European Union amounted to $20,856 per thousand pairs, coming down by -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the pantyhose import price continues to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 7.2% year-to-year. In that year, the import prices for pantyhose and tights reached their peak level of $25,165 per thousand pairs. From 2015 to 2018, the growth in terms of the import prices for pantyhose and tights remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Austria ($41,441 per thousand pairs), while the UK ($13,864 per thousand pairs) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
