Overall, consumption, however, faced a precipitous setback. Over the period under review, consumption hit record highs at 9.5K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The size of the paddy rice market in the UK skyrocketed to $274K in 2024, rising by 4,427% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, recorded a sharp shrinkage. In value terms, paddy rice imports contracted modestly to $378K in 2024. In general, imports, however, recorded a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $13M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports By Country

Vietnam (138 tons), France (89 tons) and Italy (40 tons) were the main suppliers of paddy rice imports to the UK, with a combined 71% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Vietnam ($90K), France ($64K) and Egypt ($43K) appeared to be the largest paddy rice suppliers to the UK, together comprising 52% of total imports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,552 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($2,362 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($649 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

United Kingdom's Exports of Paddy Rice

In 2024, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of paddy rice, when their volume decreased by -61.4% to 117 tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 861 tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports plummeted to $302K in 2024. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 when exports increased by 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $2M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports By Country

Germany (52 tons), the United Arab Emirates (33 tons) and Gambia (17 tons) were the main destinations of paddy rice exports from the UK, together comprising 87% of total exports. Iceland, Gibraltar, Ireland, the Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Iceland (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Germany ($185K) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from the UK, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($82K), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Iceland, with a 3.2% share.
