Netherlands Matches Price Drops to $7,281 per Ton
Netherlands Matches Export Price in January 2023
In January 2023, the matches price stood at $7,281 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), declining by -11.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient increase from January 2022 to January 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2023 figures, matches export price increased by +30.0% against September 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 76% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $8,219 per ton in December 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($9,403 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($3,359 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Matches Exports
After two months of decline, shipments abroad of matches increased by 17% to 29 tons in January 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 with an increase of 42% against the previous month.
In value terms, matches exports rose slightly to $212K (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, total exports indicated a slight expansion from January 2022 to January 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2023 figures, exports increased by +5.6% against November 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when exports increased by 37% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $307K. From November 2022 to January 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Netherlands Matches Exports by Country
Belgium (16 tons) was the main destination for matches exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, matches exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (6.8 tons), twofold. France (1.1 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.9% share.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Belgium amounted to +20.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (-14.6% per month) and France (+11.3% per month).
In value terms, Belgium ($152K) remains the key foreign market for matches exports from the Netherlands, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($23K), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.2% share.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Belgium stood at +26.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (-15.1% per month) and France (+9.1% per month).
