Mexico Fruit and Berry Exports

In 2023, approx. 4.4M tons of fruits and berries were exported from Mexico; with an increase of 11% on 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +60.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fruit and berry exports stood at $7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Exports by Country

the United States (4.2M tons) was the main destination for fruit and berry exports from Mexico, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada (130K tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+5.6% per year) and Japan (+2.7% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($6.4B) remains the key foreign market for fruits and berries exports from Mexico, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($258M), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+9.5% per year) and Japan (+0.4% per year).

Exports by Type

Avocados (1.2M tons), watermelons (727K tons) and lemons and limes (644K tons) were the main products of fruit and berry exports from Mexico, together accounting for 58% of total exports. Mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, bananas, papayas, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, melons, grapes, oranges, fruits and berries, nes, pineapples, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, dates, grapefruits, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, figs, apples, plums and sloes, pears and quinces, kiwi fruits and peaches and nectarines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified (with a CAGR of +58.1%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, avocados ($2.9B) remains the largest type of fruits and berries exported from Mexico, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries ($881M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by strawberries, with an 11% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of avocados exports stood at +10.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries (+17.2% per year) and strawberries (+14.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the fruit and berry price amounted to $1,571 per ton (FOB, Mexico), reducing by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated strong growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, fruit and berry export price decreased by -17.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,907 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,981 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($1,271 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
