Japan Transmission Shaft Export Price in April 2023
In April 2023, the transmission shaft price amounted to $14,342 per ton (FOB, Japan), picking up by 1.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 8.1% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $14,343 per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to April 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($17,210 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($7,905 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Transmission Shaft Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings ($31,701 per ton), while the average price for exports of cranks and crankshafts ($8,713 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: gearboxes and speed changers (+1.5%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Japan Transmission Shaft Exports
In April 2023, overseas shipments of transmission shafts and cranks, bearing housings and plain shaft bearings, gears and gearing and articulated link chain decreased by -7.2% to 26K tons for the first time since January 2023, thus ending a two-month rising trend. In general, exports recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 with an increase of 22% month-to-month.
In value terms, transmission shaft exports fell to $372M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, exports recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 with an increase of 21% against the previous month.
Japan Transmission Shaft Exports by Type
Gearboxes and speed changers (8.6K tons), cranks and crankshafts (8.2K tons) and flywheels and pulleys (3.3K tons) were the main products of transmission shaft exports from Japan, together accounting for 77% of total exports. These products were followed by chain; articulated link, roller, of iron or steel, bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings, bearing housings incorporating ball or roller bearings, clutches and shaft couplings and iron or steel articulated link chain, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in bearing housing with ball bearing (with a CAGR of +1.1%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, gearboxes and speed changers ($146M) remains the largest type of transmission shaft exported from Japan, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings ($71M), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by cranks and crankshafts, with a 19% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of gearboxes and speed changers totaled -2.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings (+0.3% per month) and cranks and crankshafts (-1.0% per month).
Japan Transmission Shaft Exports by Country
The United States (7.1K tons), China (4.5K tons) and Thailand (2.2K tons) were the main destinations of transmission shaft exports from Japan, with a combined 53% share of total exports. Mexico, Indonesia, Germany, India, South Korea, Brazil, the Netherlands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

In value terms, the United States ($96M), China ($66M) and Thailand ($25M) appeared to be the largest markets for transmission shaft exported from Japan worldwide, together comprising 51% of total exports. Indonesia, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, India, the Netherlands, Brazil and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
