From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (+21.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($1.1B), Germany ($719M) and the U.S. ($660M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, together accounting for 30% of global exports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Mexico, Turkey, Lithuania and Spain, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Export Prices by Country


The average plastic bottle export price stood at $3.4 per unit in 2017, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the plastic bottle export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2017, the country with the highest export price was China ($5.8 per unit), while Lithuania ($1.5 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by China (+6.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global imports totaled 2.7B units in 2017, going up by 5.1% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Global imports peaked at $8.8B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, imports failed to regain their momentum.

In 2017, the U.S. (251M units), Germany (235M units), the Netherlands (159M units), France (138M units), Belgium (133M units), the UK (116M units), Canada (111M units), Ireland (83M units), Brazil (78M units), Spain (68M units), Italy (57M units) and Iraq (50M units) represented the key importers of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in the world, comprising 54% of total import.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ireland (+12.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($1B), Germany ($646M) and France ($628M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together comprising 27% of global imports. The UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Iraq and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Import Prices by Country


The average plastic bottle import price stood at $3.1 per unit in 2017, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the plastic bottle import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Italy ($4.8 per unit), while Ireland ($930 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by the UK (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
