Contact Lense Price in Brazil Falls Notably to $281 per Thousand Units

Brazil Contact Lense Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the contact lense price amounted to $281 per thousand units (CIF, Brazil), falling by -13.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 91% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $512 per thousand units. From May 2022 to December 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($5,130 per thousand units), while the price for Costa Rica ($80.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Contact Lense Imports

In December 2022, supplies from abroad of contact lenses was finally on the rise to reach 7.7M units for the first time since September 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, contact lense imports skyrocketed to $2.2M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. In general, imports showed temperate growth. Imports peaked at 2.6M units in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Brazil Contact Lense Imports by Country

Ireland (3.7M units), the United States (3.3M units) and the UK (305K units) were the main suppliers of contact lense imports to Brazil, with a combined 95% share of total imports. Costa Rica, Hungary, Malaysia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.5%.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Costa Rica (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest contact lense suppliers to Brazil were the United States ($794K), Ireland ($649K) and Malaysia ($412K), together comprising 85% of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, South Korea, Costa Rica and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 8.8%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +10.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
