US Wheat Starch Import Price Rises 33% in April 2022

U.S. Import Prices by Country
In Apr 2022, the US wheat starch import price amounted to $744 per tonne, rising by 33% against the previous month. Over the last fifteen - month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +37.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,108 per tonne), while the price for Russia ($324 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+64.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports into the U.S.
Wheat starch imports into the United States contracted significantly to 1.5K tonnes in Apr 2022, shrinking by -36.2% compared with the previous month. Overall, imports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2021 with an increase of 62% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 4.2K tonnes in Dec 2021; however, from 2021.13 to Apr 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wheat starch imports reduced to $1.1M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Mar 2021 with an increase of 82% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $2M in Aug 2021; however, from Sep 2021 to Apr 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Australia (793 tonnes), Canada (492 tonnes) and Russia (107 tonnes) were the main suppliers of wheat starch imports to the United States, together comprising 92% of total imports.
From Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, the biggest increases were in Australia (with a CAGR of +21.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Canada ($542K), Australia ($401K) and Germany ($109K) constituted the largest wheat starch suppliers to the United States, with a combined 93% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Australia, with a CAGR of +64.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
