The U.S. ranks first in global imports on the packaging machinery market, accounting for a X% share (based on USD). It was followed by China (X%), Germany (X%) and France (X%). In 2015, U.S. packaging machinery imports totaled X million USD, which was X million USD (X%) less than the year before.
From 2007 to 2015, U.S. packaging machinery imports showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in 2009 was followed by a recovery over the next two years, until imports decreased again. In 2013-2014, a healthy increase was recorded, followed by another downturn in 2015.
In 2011, the U.S. packaging machinery importers overcame the pre-recession import level achieved in 2008. However, in 2015, it returned to the level not so far from the value of 2008.
The U.S. continues to be one of the biggest markets for global exporters. Germany and Italy were the main suppliers of packaging machinery into the U.S., with a combined X% share of total U.S. imports in 2015. However, the fastest growing supplier was China (+X% per year, ranked fourth with an X% share), while Germany faced a decline (-X% per year) and Italy tracked only insignificant +X% annual growth from 2007 to 2015. China strengthened its position in U.S. imports, from X% in 2007 to X% in 2015. By contrast, Germany saw its share reduced by -X percentage points to X%.
From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of packaging machinery. However, exports grew faster than imports on average over the period under review.
The U.S. trade deficit in this sector tracked several fluctuations over the period under review, worsening from X million USD in 2007 to X million USD in 2015. Trade deficit growth accelerated sharply in 2013-2014, but in 2015, there was a decline, caused by downward import dynamics.
