Portugal Is the World's Undisputed Leader in Exports of Natural Cork Articles, with $1.1B in 2014

Portugal dominates in the global natural and agglomerated cork article trade. In 2014, Portugal exported 136 thousand tonnes of natural and agglomerated cork articles totaling 1.05 billion USD, 2% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was France, where it supplied 19.9% of its total natural and agglomerated cork article exports in value terms, accounting for 73.6% of France's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Portugal was a net exporter of natural and agglomerated cork article. In this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms, the difference was even more pronounced due to high import prices.

Spain and France were among the other main global suppliers of natural and agglomerated cork articles in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were France (+4.8% per year) and Chile (+14.1% per year).

In 2014, Portugal's top 5 trading partners were France, the U.S., Italy, Spain and Germany, with a combined 66.4% share of Portugal's exports. The share of Italy increased (+2.6 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-3.7 percentage points).
