For the third year in a row, the Uruguayan zinc market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 66% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Uruguay recorded growth in supplies from abroad of zinc, which increased by 37% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +115.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest zinc supplier to Uruguay, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, zinc imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), fivefold.

The average zinc import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
