Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, exports of tobacco (unmanufactured) from Uganda fell to X tons, reducing by X% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for unmanufactured tobacco exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Egypt (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year) and Egypt (X% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania (X tons), with a X% share of total imports.
