Gingerbread Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of gingerbread were finally on the rise to reach X kg for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 24,109% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 25,318% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X kg) was the main destination for gingerbread exports from Uganda, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, gingerbread exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X kg), fourfold. South Sudan (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya amounted to +6.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-16.7% per year) and South Sudan (-20.3% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the key foreign market for gingerbread exports from Uganda, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kenya totaled +35.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-11.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-23.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average gingerbread export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 81%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+469.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of gingerbread were imported into Uganda; jumping by 274% against the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 217%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest gingerbread supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, gingerbread imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X tons), threefold. China (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt totaled +23.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+37.5% per year) and China (-1.4% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gingerbread to Uganda, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Egypt amounted to +31.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+48.8% per year) and South Africa (-9.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average gingerbread import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -36.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 73%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+28.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
