Exports from the U.S.

In 2020, overseas shipments of iron ores and concentrates decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron ore exports contracted to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, posted a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Canada (X tonnes) was the main destination for iron ore exports from the United States, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, iron ore exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Slovakia (X tonnes), with an X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+X% per year) and Slovakia (+X% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for iron ore exports from the United States, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+X% per year) and Slovakia (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average iron ore export price amounted to $X per tonne, declining by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Iron Ore Imports

Imports into the U.S.

Iron ore imports into the United States declined to X tonnes in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron ore imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tonnes), Canada (X tonnes) and Sweden (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of iron ore imports to the United States, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Bahrain, Switzerland, Chile and Turkey, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Turkey (+X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest iron ore suppliers to the United States were Brazil ($X), Canada ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Bahrain, Chile, Switzerland and Turkey, which together accounted for a further X the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average iron ore import price amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, iron ore import price increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 an increase of X% year-to-year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per tonne), while the price for Turkey ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
