Tea Market Size in Sweden

In 2020, the Swedish tea market decreased by -X% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. Tea exports from Sweden stood at X tonnes in 2020, surging by X% on 2019. In general, exports, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports shrank modestly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. From 2009 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Norway (X tonnes) was the main destination for tea exports from Sweden, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Finland (X tonnes), more than tenfold. Denmark (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Norway amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (-X% per year) and Denmark (-X% per year).

In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the key foreign market for tea exports from Sweden, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Finland ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Norway totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (-X% per year) and Denmark (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average tea export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, tea export price decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Norway ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, overseas purchases of tea decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports shrank notably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2009 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, Poland (X tonnes) constituted the largest tea supplier to Sweden, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tonnes), twofold. Sri Lanka (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
