Zinc Market Size in Sri Lanka

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Sri Lankan zinc market, when its value decreased by -2.3% to $X. In general, consumption, however, posted a pronounced increase. In 2021, shipments abroad of zinc increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. In value terms, zinc exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 66%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

India (X tons) was the main destination for zinc exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 790% share of total exports. Moreover, zinc exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India amounted to +12.4%.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for zinc exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 986% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with an 115% share of total exports.

In 2021, the average zinc export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Zinc Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of zinc decreased by -20.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 99%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), India (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of zinc imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 90% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +69.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest zinc suppliers to Sri Lanka were India ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 90% of total imports.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were India ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
