Zinc Market Size in Spain

The Spanish zinc market fell to $X in 2021, waning by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -12.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 61%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of zinc exports from Spain, together comprising 51% of total exports. Italy, France, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UK and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +84.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average zinc export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Spain

In 2021, imports of zinc into Spain soared to X tons, with an increase of 49% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 73%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, zinc imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of zinc imports to Spain, together accounting for 70% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +784.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of zinc to Spain, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Luxembourg, with a 9.7% share.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per ton) and Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
