Zinc Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of decline, the Southeast Asian zinc market increased by 13% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Zinc Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, zinc production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Zinc Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of zinc increased by 61% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), comprising a 7.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 9.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +63.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 8.7%.

Among the main exporting countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +66.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, zinc export price decreased by -11.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Singapore ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Zinc Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of zinc, when their volume decreased by -4.6% to X tons. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, zinc imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Malaysia (11%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +19.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest zinc importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
