The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather surged to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 32%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Thailand prevails in leather structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. Cambodia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+59.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +59.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.2%), Indonesia (-8.5%) and Vietnam (-19.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+26 p.p.) and Cambodia (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-3 p.p.), Indonesia (-4.6 p.p.) and Vietnam (-21.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Cambodia ($X), with a combined 39% share of total exports.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +61.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 42% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, imports of sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather in South-Eastern Asia fell sharply to X tons, declining by -16.6% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 12% share.

In Vietnam, imports of sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather shrank by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
