In 2021, the amount of uncooked pasta (containing eggs) exported in SADC surged to X tons, rising by 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncooked pasta exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together took near 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta exports from South Africa stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Angola (+38.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Angola (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-8.2% per year) and Angola (+40.1% per year).

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, uncooked pasta export price increased by +12.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in SADC

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of uncooked pasta (containing eggs) increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncooked pasta imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of uncooked pasta (containing eggs), achieving 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together creating a 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta imports into South Africa stood at +7.5%. At the same time, Seychelles (+19.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.5%), Mauritius (+6.8%) and Mozambique (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-1.2%) and Madagascar (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Mauritius, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Seychelles increased by +24, +4.9, +4.6, +3.4 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mozambique ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Seychelles and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Seychelles, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
