Pork Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC pork market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Pork Production in SADC

In value terms, pork production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by X%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Angola (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average pork yield in SADC dropped to X kg per head, declining by X% compared with 2021. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, pork exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) took an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (X%).

Angola was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by South Africa (X%). The following importers - Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) - each recorded a X% share of total imports.

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
