Fruit Market Size in SADC
The SADC fruit market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -2% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Fruit Production in SADC
In value terms, fruit production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 35%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together accounting for 62% of total production. Angola, Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average fruit yield in SADC totaled X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the fruit yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of fruits production in SADC fell modestly to X ha, leveling off at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to fruit production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC
For the seventh consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of fruits, which increased by 4% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.0% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, fruit exports reached $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +83.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), making up a 6.7% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+14.5%), Zimbabwe (+12.2%) and Namibia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique and Zimbabwe increased by +3.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fruit supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 3.9% share.
In South Africa, fruit exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+12.3% per year) and Zimbabwe (+12.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, imports of fruits in SADC rose notably to X tons, picking up by 10% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, fruit imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 9.8%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of fruits in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+18.1%), Lesotho (+12.0%), Botswana (+9.0%), Tanzania (+3.4%), Namibia (+2.0%), Mozambique (+1.4%) and Mauritius (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-2.0%), Zimbabwe (-2.7%) and Angola (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho increased by +18, +6 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mauritius ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
