Fruit Market Size in SADC

The SADC fruit market reduced to $X in 2022, shrinking by -2% against the previous year. Fruit Production in SADC

In value terms, fruit production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 30%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together comprising 62% of total production. Angola, Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average fruit yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the fruit yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the fruit harvested area in SADC reduced modestly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in SADC

For the seventh year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of fruits, which increased by 3.3% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, fruit exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +80.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), achieving a 6.8% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fruit exports from South Africa stood at +4.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+14.5%) and Zimbabwe (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique increased by +4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fruit supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +7.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+10.0% per year) and Mozambique (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of fruits were imported in SADC; increasing by 6.9% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of fruits, constituting 37% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+18.1%), Lesotho (+12.0%), Botswana (+9.0%), Mozambique (+8.2%), Tanzania (+3.4%), Namibia (+3.0%) and Mauritius (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-1.9%), Zimbabwe (-2.7%) and Angola (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+17 p.p.), Botswana (+5.6 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-2 p.p.), Swaziland (-2.8 p.p.), Zambia (-3 p.p.), Zimbabwe (-3.6 p.p.) and Angola (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mauritius ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 56% of total imports. Namibia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +11.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
