Frozen Pork Carcase Market Size in SADC

The SADC frozen pork carcase market fell modestly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Exports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of frozen carcases of pig meat, when their volume decreased by -67.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 146%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork carcase exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of frozen carcases of pig meat, achieving 56% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (16%) and Namibia (6.6%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+191.3%), Swaziland (+38.1%) and Namibia (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +191.3% from 2012-2022. Swaziland (+20 p.p.), Botswana (+16 p.p.) and Namibia (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -40.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest frozen pork carcase supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Botswana ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +190.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of frozen carcases of pig meat decreased by -29.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork carcase imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo was the main importer of frozen carcases of pig meat in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 45% of total imports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Seychelles (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest frozen pork carcase importing markets in SADC were Namibia ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +8.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
