The SADC crabs, not frozen market rose slightly to $X in 2022, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 9.5%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of crabs, not frozen exported in SADC reduced to X tons, dropping by -8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mozambique was the key exporter of crabs, not frozen in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest crabs, not frozen supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.

In Mozambique, crabs, not frozen exports expanded at an average annual rate of +59.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (-0.4% per year) and Namibia (-11.6% per year).

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of crabs, not frozen decreased by -1.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports faced a sharp slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 172% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Angola (X tons) represented the main importer of crabs, not frozen, constituting 42% of total imports. Namibia (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Zambia (13%) and Botswana (11%). Zimbabwe (X kg), Mozambique (X kg) and Swaziland (X kg) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crabs, not frozen in SADC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Angola amounted to +9.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+13.5% per year) and Zambia (+13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 113% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
