In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at X units in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, drawing chalk exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units), China (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of drawing chalk exports from South Korea, together comprising 45% of total exports. France, Tanzania, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +34.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks exports from South Korea, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+10.3% per year) and Japan (+3.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average drawing chalk export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, drawing chalk export price increased by +14.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, drawing chalk imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 20%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest drawing chalk supplier to South Korea, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, drawing chalk imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X units), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-2.0% per year) and Vietnam (+41.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks to South Korea, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+41.7% per year) and France (+3.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average drawing chalk import price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the price for France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
