Soya Sauce Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in the Puerto Rican soya sauce market, when its value increased by 0.2% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soya sauce production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 34% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (8.6%), the United States (8.4%), Thailand (6.8%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (4.7%). Singapore (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to soya sauce exports from China stood at +7.3%. At the same time, Thailand (+10.5%), Japan (+9.9%), the Netherlands (+6.4%), the United States (+6.2%), Indonesia (+4.0%), South Korea (+3.6%), Vietnam (+3.6%), Malaysia (+2.9%) and Singapore (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+4.8 p.p.), Japan (+2.8 p.p.) and Thailand (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest soya sauce supplying countries from Puerto Rico were China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +9.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Canada (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the main importers of soya sauce, together achieving 32% of total imports. Australia (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Russia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Spain (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to soya sauce imports into the United States stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Spain (+14.8%), Germany (+10.4%), South Korea (+9.0%), France (+7.8%), the Netherlands (+7.2%), Canada (+5.8%), Singapore (+4.5%), Indonesia (+2.9%), Australia (+1.4%) and the UK (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of the UK (-1.8 p.p.), Australia (-1.8 p.p.), Russia (-2.2 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-4.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 26% share of total imports. Germany, Canada, the UK, Australia, Spain, Russia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, South Korea and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +15.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
