Sailboat Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was growth in the Puerto Rican sailboat market, when its value increased by 2.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a deep setback. In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest sailboat supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Finland, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in France stood at +12.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+38.5% per year) and Finland (+13.5% per year).

Bahamas was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor imports, with a CAGR of +61.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Greece (+35.2%), the Netherlands (+17.7%), Gibraltar (+16.2%), France (+13.9%), Spain (+11.7%), Germany (+10.1%), Italy (+7.5%), the United States (+4.6%) and British Virgin Islands (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the UK (-1.9%) and Qatar (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bahamas (+44 p.p.), the Netherlands (+4.6 p.p.) and Greece (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the UK and Qatar saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -40.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sailboat importing markets into Puerto Rico were British Virgin Islands ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 34% share of total imports. The UK, France, Italy, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Spain, Bahamas and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Greece, with a CAGR of +27.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Puerto Rico stood at less than $X per thousand units in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was British Virgin Islands ($X per thousand units), while Qatar ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
