Melon Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Puerto Rican melon market, when its value increased by 3.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a abrupt descent. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 31%. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the average melon yield in Puerto Rico reached X tons per ha, growing by 3.2% on the previous year. In general, the yield, however, faced a abrupt decline. In 2021, Spain (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Honduras (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons), Mexico (X tons), China (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) was the major exporter of melons in the world, making up 88% of total export.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Italy (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest melon supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 22% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.8% per year) and Brazil (+2.3% per year).

In 2021, the United States (X tons) was the major importer of melons, committing 26% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (8.8%), the UK (7.5%), Canada (6.4%), Germany (5.8%) and Spain (5%). Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Italy (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the United States decreased at an average annual rate of -1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+92.6%), Hong Kong SAR (+19.9%), Saudi Arabia (+15.2%) and Spain (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +92.6% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands, France, the UK and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Portugal (-1.1%), Canada (-1.3%), Italy (-2.6%) and Belgium (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kyrgyzstan (+1.7 p.p.) and Spain (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the United States saw its share reduced by -3.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 40% share of total imports. Germany, the UK, Canada, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Hong Kong SAR, Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +106.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
