Spain (X tons) was the main destination for primary fiber crops exports from Portugal, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, primary fiber crops exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 18% share.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary fiber crops imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average primary fiber crops import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
