Executive Summary

The Mexican footwear market has experienced significant developments from 2020 to 2024, with notable trends in consumption, production, and trade. As part of the global footwear landscape, Mexico relies heavily on imports to meet domestic demand, while also maintaining a strong export relationship with the United States. The market is characterized by fluctuating prices, both in terms of exports and imports, which have influenced trade dynamics. Looking ahead to 2035, the market is expected to evolve further, driven by global production shifts and changing consumer preferences.

Market Context (2020-2024)

Globally, the highest volumes of footwear consumption in 2024 were recorded in China, the United States, and India, which together accounted for 33% of global consumption. In terms of production, China dominated the market with 11 billion pairs, representing approximately 56% of total global production. Vietnam and India followed as the second and third largest producers, respectively. Within this context, Mexico's market dynamics have been shaped by its reliance on imports to satisfy domestic demand, with China, Vietnam, and Italy being the primary suppliers.

Trade and Price Signals

In 2024, the largest suppliers of footwear to Mexico, in value terms, were China, Vietnam, and Italy, which together held a 78% share of total imports. The United States remained the dominant export destination for Mexican footwear, accounting for 95% of total exports, followed by Guatemala. The average export price of footwear from Mexico was $23 per pair in 2024, showing a significant decline of 29.9% from the previous year. This decline was part of a broader trend where export prices failed to regain the highs seen in 2019. Similarly, the average import price was $11 per pair, decreasing by 15.6% from the previous year, continuing a relatively flat trend over the period.

Outlook to 2035

Looking forward to 2035, the Mexican footwear market is expected to undergo further transformation. Global production dynamics, particularly the dominance of China and the rise of other Asian producers, will continue to influence Mexico's import strategies. Additionally, the strong export relationship with the United States is likely to persist, although diversification into other markets may be explored. Price volatility is expected to remain a key factor, impacting both import and export strategies. As consumer preferences evolve and sustainability becomes a more significant concern, the Mexican footwear market will need to adapt to these changes to maintain competitiveness on the global stage.
