Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood pellets and other agglomerates imports expanded to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Uruguay was the largest importer of wood pellets and other agglomerates in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood pellets and other agglomerates imports into Uruguay stood at +31.0%. At the same time, Paraguay (+62.1%), Venezuela (+30.3%), Peru (+21.3%) and Chile (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +62.1% from 2012-2022. Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Venezuela and Peru increased by +52, +11, +5.2, +3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Peru, with a CAGR of +30.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
