The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising 64% of total production. Algeria, Syrian Arab Republic, Israel and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in MENA

Fresh pork carcase exports surged to X tons in 2022, rising by 16% against 2021 figures. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 264%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 275%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Oman (X tons) was the major exporter of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat, constituting 77% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Israel (8.2%). Turkey (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Oman was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +60.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+17.3%), Turkey (+17.1%) and Israel (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Oman (+77 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and Israel saw its share reduced by -13.1% and -29.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in MENA, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 5.4% share.

In Oman, fresh pork carcase exports expanded at an average annual rate of +42.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+8.3% per year) and Israel (+7.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 69%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Fresh pork carcase imports declined notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -29% on 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kuwait represented the main importer of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), Oman (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Palestine (X tons), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Lebanon (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh pork carcase imports into Kuwait stood at +38.4%. At the same time, Iraq (+70.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+38.5%), Lebanon (+31.4%), Oman (+20.8%), Turkey (+15.9%) and Palestine (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +70.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kuwait (+36 p.p.), Iraq (+12 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+6 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Oman (-3.9 p.p.) and Palestine (-14.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kuwait ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in MENA, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kuwait totaled +54.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+34.2% per year) and Iraq (+67.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fresh pork carcase import price decreased by -34.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
