In 2022, the MENA's crabs, not frozen market increased by 7.7% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of crabs, not frozen, when their volume decreased by -5.6% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 119%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 267%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bahrain represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), making up a 15% share of total exports. Yemen (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Bahrain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crabs, not frozen exports, with a CAGR of +53.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Yemen (+22.1%) and Morocco (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Bahrain (+73 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco saw its share reduced by -67% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bahrain ($X) remains the largest crabs, not frozen supplier in MENA, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bahrain stood at +37.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+13.7% per year) and Yemen (+19.6% per year).

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports in MENA

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in supplies from abroad of crabs, not frozen, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 166% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 107%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the key importers of crabs, not frozen in MENA, together making up 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), comprising a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Jordan (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +44.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
