The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood pulp exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine-year period. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Wood pulp imports into Japan declined slightly to X tons in 2021, dropping by -X% compared with 2020. In general, imports saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a mild setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main suppliers of wood pulp imports to Japan, together accounting for X% of total imports. These countries were followed by Chile, Russia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Finland, which together accounted for a further X 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Canada ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the largest wood pulp suppliers to Japan, with a combined X% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
