Frozen Whole Turkey Market Size in Italy

The Italian frozen whole turkey market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a dramatic decline. Frozen whole turkey consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole turkey production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Frozen whole turkey production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Italy

For the third consecutive year, Italy recorded decline in overseas shipments of frozen whole turkeys, which decreased by -15.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole turkey exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Somalia (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Central African Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen whole turkey exports from Italy, together accounting for 80% of total exports. Sudan, Croatia and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +139.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for frozen whole turkey exported from Italy were Somalia ($X), Mali ($X) and Central African Republic ($X), together accounting for 77% of total exports. Sudan, Croatia and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Croatia, with a CAGR of +126.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average frozen whole turkey export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Croatia ($X per ton) and Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($X per ton) and Central African Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Benin (+135.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy

In 2022, purchases abroad of frozen whole turkeys increased by 484% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 6,885% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole turkey imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 4,638% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Denmark (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole turkey to Italy, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen whole turkey imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Denmark totaled +30.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+23.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.7% per year).

In value terms, Denmark ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest frozen whole turkey suppliers to Italy, together accounting for 99% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, which accounted for a further 1.1%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +61.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average frozen whole turkey import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, frozen whole turkey import price decreased by -9.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
