Wheat Flour Market Size in Greece

After four years of growth, the Greek wheat flour market decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, shipments abroad of wheat or meslin flour decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat flour exports dropped to $X in 2020. Overall, total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tonnes), Albania (X tonnes) and Cyprus (X tonnes) were the main destinations of wheat flour exports from Greece, with a combined X% share of total exports. Romania and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Italy, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Albania ($X) and Cyprus ($X) constituted the largest markets for wheat flour exported from Greece worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. Romania and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X the main countries of destination, Italy recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average wheat flour export price amounted to $X per tonne, declining by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Bulgaria ($X per tonne) and Cyprus ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per tonne) and Albania ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Albania, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Greece

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of wheat or meslin flour were imported into Greece; waning by -X% against 2019 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, wheat flour imports fell significantly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Bulgaria (X tonnes) constituted the largest wheat flour supplier to Greece, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat flour imports from Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tonnes), threefold. Italy (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Bulgaria stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+X% per year) and Italy (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest wheat flour suppliers to Greece were Bulgaria ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, France saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
