The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, electric rail locomotive exports reached $X in 2023. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by X% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany was the main exporter of electric rail locomotives in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Austria (X%), the UK (X%), Spain (X%) and Russia (X%). Poland (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of electric rail locomotives. At the same time, Spain (X%), the UK (X%), France (X%), Poland (X%), Austria (X%) and Russia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of France (X p.p.), Austria (X p.p.), the UK (X p.p.), Spain (X p.p.), Russia (X p.p.) and Poland (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Germany (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest electric rail locomotive supplier in Europe, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (X% per year) and France (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
For the third consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of electric rail locomotives, which increased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, electric rail locomotive imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Overall, imports posted a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Belgium represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached X% of total imports. Estonia (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sweden (X%), Spain (X%) and Bulgaria (X%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Finland (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Belgium decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Ireland (X%), Estonia (X%), Spain (X%), the Czech Republic (X%), Bulgaria (X%), Austria (X%) and Sweden (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Poland (X%), Germany (X%) and Finland (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Estonia, Spain, Sweden, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland and Austria increased by X, X, X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest electric rail locomotive importing markets in Europe were Sweden ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Ireland, Bulgaria, Germany and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
