Exports in ECOWAS

In 2023, the amount of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) exported in ECOWAS surged to X tons, rising by X% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bridge exports surged to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger represented the major exporter of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Burkina Faso (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Gambia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Niger was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Gambia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Benin (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%) and Ghana (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Niger (X p.p.), Burkina Faso (X p.p.) and Gambia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Benin, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Niger ($X), Benin ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Niger, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2023, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) increased by X% to X tons in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bridge imports surged to $X in 2023. Overall, imports showed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the main importers of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel), together achieving X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a X% share.
