Lentil Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the East European lentil market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2022, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Lentil Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, lentil production surged to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest lentil producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, lentil production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bulgaria (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Russia, lentil production expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (X% per year) and Ukraine (X% per year).

In 2023, the average yield of lentils in Eastern Europe declined to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2022. In general, the yield, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, lentil exports surged to $X in 2023. Overall, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Ukraine (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. Poland (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Russia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, lentil import price increased by X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2022, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
