Tomato Market Size in Eastern Asia

Tomato Production in Eastern Asia

China dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tomatoes. At the same time, South Korea (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, tomato imports fell to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Japan (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Macao SAR (X%).

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tomatoes imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Macao SAR (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Macao SAR and Japan saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and Macao SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, together comprising X% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
